“Don't Gild The Lily," By Lily Forte

By Rachel S and Rachel H
Going into the new year Lily Forte is certainly one to watch! This Los Angeles based artist follows up her 2024 EP Can't Handle Hollywood with her new concept album "Don't Gild The Lily." Providing a modern twist on rock n' roll and inspired by artists such as Lana Del Ray and Kali Uchis, her unique style shines within the record. Rooted in the nostalgia of both old Hollywood and the simplicity of everyday life, the album transports listeners into Forte's carefully created worlds.
While the album's inspiration is deeply rooted in her own experience as an upcoming musician, it explores topics that will resonate with many. "Life was giving me so much at the time, but I still wasn't fulfilled" said Lily on the inspiration for tracks "Loners on the West" and "Stardust". Later she finds further inspiration in her home state for "Florida's Finest" and musical legends in "Jimi and Janis". From stripped back emotional ballads to upbeat songs all supported by Forte's powerful vocals and impressive range, "Don't Gild The Lily" has a song for everyone.
Don't Gild The Lily takes its name from the idiom meaning not to over-embellish what is already beautiful, which is a philosophy that shapes both the album's message and its sound. Playing on her own name, Lily Forte reflects her belief that "there is beauty in the simple nature of being." The album was recorded almost entirely live in a garage studio with live performances on trumpet, bass, guitar, piano, and drums. The result is a warm, lively sound that evokes vintage rock concerts and 1920s jazz influences, balancing old Hollywood glamor with modern intimacy and allowing the songs to translate seamlessly from record to stage.
Los Angeles–based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lily Forte has been honing her craft since age eight, taking inspiration from love, loss, and classic rock 'n' roll. Known for her rich alto vocals, wide range, and emotionally precise delivery, Forte blends timeless influences like Carole King and Amy Winehouse with a modern indie-folk sensibility. Her aesthetic stems from old Hollywood glamor, bold makeup, and storytelling. She has performed at iconic venues such as the Troubadour and Hotel Café, and continues to establish herself as a breakout artist with a distinctive voice and a rapidly growing presence in today's music industry.
