Canadian indie rock singer-songwriter Leith Ross released their newest album, I Can See the Future, earlier this month. The album explores the emotional experience of being human in a fast-paced world, with emotional tracks like "I Can See the Future," "I Will," and "Alone." Designed to be listened to in order, the album unfolds as a story, a deeply personal letter to the queer community, sharing Ross's experiences through their own lens. It invites listeners to temporarily detach from the outside world and find peace in the music. At its core, I Can See the Future offers a message of hope and reassurance: things do get better, hence the album's title.
Ross usually writes during times of intense emotion from start to finish. However, "Stay" was somewhat difficult to write, as they wrote one half and had to come back to it later. The song explores the emotions of deep personal reflection. "I Cannot Be Human Alone," were memorable lyrics, which were sparked out of taking care of yourself and others during times of hardship. That lyric reassures the listener that there are other people to help them and that they are not alone. Ross found that creating this album helped them feel more connected and engaged with their community by prompting deep, unanswerable questions and inspiring reflection along the way. Leith emphasizes that because of their queerness, they are able to see the world in completely different ways. This viewpoint is seen embedded throughout their discography.
Later this month, Ross will embark on their fall North American tour, all around Canada and the United States, aiming to foster a strong sense of community at each stop by partnering with local grassroots organizations. Hopefully, this will encourage more fans to engage in their communities by participating in things they are passionate about.
