Madison Cunningham Press Conference

From the exclusive press conference with Republic Records, °1824, and Universal Music Group
Recently I had the honor of speaking to Madison Cunningham about her new album
"Ace". She is a remarkable artist of our time, and is noted as a true "musician's
musician" in the industry today. Cunningham's new album Ace is out now, and it it truly
such a beautiful project.
When asked the question "What song on your upcoming album was the most difficult to
write?" and "Which song was the easiest to write?" Cunningham says that her upcoming
songs Beyond That Moon and Golden Gate were the hardest to write. In her song
Beyond That Moon, she says that she had to have "one moment of honesty in the
writing" to complete the song. Her song Golden Gate was lyrically written then finished
much later. She says it was important for her to "make sure the lyrics fit in that cadence,
but also were emotionally matching the rest of the record". On the other hand, her song
Take 2 was the easiest, only taking her about a day to write.
I also got the chance to ask her about her influences growing up. Growing up religious
she says that she wasn't allowed to listen to much, but as she grew into her adult years
she listened to a lot of influencial artists like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Jeff
Buckley and Fiona Apple. Joni Mitchell's (who she describes as her "north star") album
Court and Spark inspired her to begin writing her own music, specifically the song Down
to You. She says the song was the "first time she had been seen as a person". She
describes almost a sense of community that the song brings, how it connects strangers
and feels like "a majority of people can find familiarity in it".
