Sally: A Short Analysis of Concert Engagement

By Bethany M
When you think about ROLE MODEL'S recent tour No Place Like Tour, your mind might instantly go to the Wizard of Oz inspired attire and incredible setlists, but more notably the nightly "Sallys" inspired by his recent hit song "Sally, When the Wine Runs Out," released on the deluxe album Kansas Anymore (The Longest Goodbye).
One of the most important things an artist can do is have an engaging concert or have a different memorable thing each night. Taylor Swift has the 22 hats and surprise songs, Olivia Rodrigo has encore shirts, and Tucker has "Sallys." Each night Tucker brings a different fan or celebrity to dance and have fun on stage for his hit song. This builds speculation, fan engagement, and excitement to which person will be chosen each night. For more highly anticipated concerts like his shows in New York City, Los Angeles, and Festival shows like Lollapalooza and Outside Lands fans will speculate weeks ahead which person or fan will be chosen. This unique element increases artist and fan connection and boosts the atmosphere each night, as well as being a little surprise for the fans.
Recently, he has brought out incredible artists like The Dare, Renee Rapp, Troye Sivan, Olivia Rodrigo, Conan Gray, and more. The "Sallys" aren't always just for the fans in attendance, the surprise can also be a way to bridge fanbases and increase exposure for the song and therefore resulting in it achieving high billboard success. This unique element has been mostly a recent development in the music industry. With most artists having similar styles, resources, and genres, musicians have to be unique to stand out.
