Your Future Favorite Artist, Fifi Scott

By Rory M
She's currently in the background, but I could not be more excited to see her as the frontwoman. Fifi Scott (@fifibeescott on Instagram) is most known for her work as Keni Titus's drummer. She's been working with Keni since her first ever show opening for beabadoobee 2-3 years ago, but has had a long-term interest in music. She started playing drums at age 6, her interest stemming from her jealousy that her brother got a drum set for Christmas, but she didn't. After that, her dad set her up with a drum teacher, Jeff Friedl, who plays for the band "Devo". Fifi only started writing her own music a couple of years ago for an old band, and picked up a guitar around the same time. Fifi stated, "It was that same magic feeling I felt with drums". Now, not only does Fifi play drums and a little guitar for one of our favorite small artists, she writes and sings herself. She is literally your favorite artist's favorite artist. On TikTok(@fleurbeescott), you can find many videos of Fifi singing her original work as well as a cover of The Beatles' "I Will" and an especially ethereal cover of "not a lot, just forever" by Adrienne Lenker. Her voice is incomparable to anything I've heard before, the only thing I could think of would be an angelic version of a 2000's rockstar. Unfortunately, when I had the pleasure of meeting Fifi after Keni Titus's NY show, I was way too starstruck (and let's be honest, awestruck, cmon, have you seen her?) to ask any real questions.
Lucky for me, Fifi was kind enough to answer a few of my questions over instagram DM's. The answers I got from her seemed very candid, vibrant even, her personality shining through. I could tell that being in her life would make your mouth hurt from smiling all the time. I know she definitely made me smile when I met her. She came out of the back and came up to me and shook my hand. She was the sweetest ever. I must have been looking at her with the widest eyes because she then said, "don't cry," and hugged me. After that, she went into the back again and got her sticks for me, which she then signed my name on as well as her own signature. She moved on to other fans who were lining up to meet her after that, greeting all of them warmly with a smile on her face. Stupidly, the only words I could manage were "you're so beautiful," but I'm hoping this article redeems me. I learned through my internet deep dive on Fifi that she has been a fan of beabodoobee for a long time. When I asked her how it felt to open for her, she said, "I saw Bea play at the Fonda when I was in high school, and I remember turning to my friends and being like, yeah, I'll tour with her one day... and then it happened. Was pretty awesome. Bea and her whole camp are incredibly beautiful people." Is she Psychic or does she have an intense drive? probably both. A lot of artists can write insightful, soulful lyrics, but Fifi does it in a way that feels special. You can tell how vulnerable her writing is, almost to the point that you can feel what she feels. Her lyricism is outwardly extremely passionate, in a way that not only makes you see her, but also makes it feel like she sees you, too. Though the snippets we've gotten from Fifi have been only acoustic, I imagine her music style to be a raw yet lush type of organic sound. A song of hers that felt particularly brilliant, to me and to me as she names it as her "favourite", was one called "Can't Sleep". In the TikTok, the song was cut short by Fifi's best friend Aria's calling, but the snippet we got was exceptionally melodic, like ear candy. "Cant sleep" is especially intimate and poetic; it is noticeably vulnerable. It told a story that I could visualize in my head, making me feel like I had lived the lyrics. When I asked for her inspiration behind lyrics to a couple of her other songs, she said, my favorite quote ever by the way, "uhhhh girls. and I write songs about people the same reason I write letters; because your words turn into somewhat of an object, which can mitigate defensiveness on both sides." I don't know about you, but since the loss of boygenius in 2024, i've found it extremely hard to find relatable sad queer music
I'm so excited for Fifi to enter that scene; it is quite obvious that she has a lot to offer to the music world as a whole. Not only does Fifi pull inspiration from personal experience, but she also pulls it from those who came before her. She names her father first, saying she got her music taste from him mostly. She says bands like "The Clash and LCD Soundsystem" and people like "Neil Young or Iggy Pop" inspired her. She says the bad Wednesday is "awesome. I've loved them for many years". Like the Clash's Joe Strummer, Fifi has a raw energy and intense charisma while on stage. Her focus is evident in her expression, and it is something truly remarkable. Hopefully, we'll get to see that same energy at a solo show someday, as Fifi will be releasing music under the name "Fleur" (her real name, adorable and aesthetic, I know) very soon. Make sure to be on the lookout for Fifi's new music. I know I won't be able to sleep until it's out.
